When applied to paper with a textured surface, called "tooth", pastels are very versatile and well suited to mixing and blending directly on paper, resulting in a velvety, plush quality. 

Pastels are made of two simple ingredients, a binder (calcium carbonate), and a pigment. They create colour by depositing a thin layer of dry pigment on paper. They love to be smudged and can create soft sunrise and sunset effects. Use a cotton swap, soft cloth or fingers to gently rub the pigment over the paper wherever a soft, mellow impression is desired.
